Commercial

Commercial and retail construction encompasses a wide range of project types, and Thornton Tomasetti has extensive experience with them all.

Many of our large projects outside the United States include major urban retail components combined with commercial office space, including the podium and tower of Taipei 101, the Shanghai Plaza 66 mall and towers, and Suria Kuala Lumpur City Centre, the seven-story regional shopping plaza at the Petronas Twin Towers in Malaysia. We understand the challenges of stacking commercially desirable column grids for shops with the different demands of cinemas, public spaces and parking areas, while incorporating design changes for key tenants within tight schedules.

We have designed and upgraded many of the leading shopping centers across the U.S., including Baltimore’s Gallery at Harborplace, the Mall of Georgia at Mill Creek, New York’s Roosevelt Field, Maumee Ohio’s Mall at Fallen Timbers, Chicago’s 600 North Michigan Avenue and many others.

Signature long-span retail spaces are another Thornton Tomasetti specialty, as reflected in the unique five-segment ‘dome’ of Suria KLCC, the Sony Plaza public arcade in New York, the glazed Winter Garden between World Financial Center towers in New York that echoes the proportions of Grand Central Terminal, and the 4.5-acre column-free Gaylord Palms Resort atrium in Orlando, Fla. UBS Warburg’s trading floor in Stamford, Conn., nearly an acre of column-free space, is a unique application of our expertise.

Special new and renovated urban store structural design is another area of expertise. Examples include reconfiguring two adjacent buildings to create a 19-story flagship store for Gucci, designing a building within a building for the flagship Niketown store, and extensively modifying portions of Rockefeller Center for auction house Christie’s, all in New York, and designing the Guess? Jeans flagship store and St. John’s Knits in Chicago.

Our extensive portfolio of commercial office and retail projects span the nation and the globe. The World Financial Center, The New York Times Building and Bloomberg Tower in New York, One Liberty Place and Comcast Center in Philadelphia, CNG Tower and One Mellon Bank in Pittsburgh, ABN Amro and Citadel in Chicago, CBX Tower in Paris and Federation Tower in Moscow are just a few examples.
